South Island and high winds & wet

Had an uneventful bluebridge crossing , had a cabin and slept for a good 2 hours confirming my conviction that BLUEBRIDGE are the best and having cabins is an excellent incentive to travel with them .

Was off the ferry ahead of a large group of fellow cyclists , some TA’s but also a bunch of SOUNDS TO SOUNDS brevet riders who started early today from queen Charlotte Track . It was about 5 pm but I had a short 37 km ride before my day was done .My mission was to get into Blenheim fast and settle into an air BnB very close to Taylor Dam so right on the route for an early getaway. Worked perfectly with a lovely room , likeable hosts who invited me to eat dinner with them.

Was raining at dawn but stopped just as I headed off at 7am . The country opened up with some amazing views as I climbed up and over Taylor’s Pass

After about an hour and a half a steady light rain fell , together with a strong northerly gale which mostly helped until the twists and turns had wind swirls hitting at odd angles. Started getting very wet , no rain pants and eventually wet through . One of those wet socks days , only the magnificent scenery preventing despondency.

Made the decision to shorten the day and stop after 60 km at this highly recommended farm stay with shearer’s quarters , nice beds , great kitchen and 5 G wifi . Thus would mean an xtra long day tomorrow with Hanmer Springs the destination , up and over the MOLESWORTH .

Arrived wet through and filthy gritty from the road muck , but they had a hose and I was able to clean the bike and bags , very helpful .

The Cookshop facility very comfortable and as I appear to be the only guest it’s been a tranquil retreat.

Tomorrow I get to ride the MOLESWORTH road and the weather should be on the mend .
