This is the second time Roger has organized the Ahipara weekend special for striders. Group departed from kerikeri about 9am – The route up was via Mangamuka bridge – Broadwood. Some of the best and most scenic roads we have in the North. Actual riding time- 4 .22 hours – plus a good break at Mangamuka Bridge and Broadwood 4square. Margie joined for 50kms out then returned from kohukohu junction. Chick magnet developed a serious case of tendonitis of the knee – and will be needing a lot of TLC – if any of his flock of appreciative chicks are reading this blog. He made it as far as Kaitaia on the return before abandoning to the support vehicle. I also shot back via car on sunday morning for a sea kayaking engagement around the big island of the cavallis.
The afternoon at Ahipara was entertaining. Roger had an old mate – an “Alchemist” who has been attempting to turn certain varieties of grapes to gold. So far without success – but his wines ( all three of them) were sampled at his spectacular winery high above the Ahipara flats. The sampling was a fun time- we all had a plastic chair to sit in which was as well as the 110 kms had depleted energy and we all needed a bit of a rest.
The food – no feast is a better description – was fantastic. You need to see it to get an idea. Next year perhaps? Roger has pre-booked for 2012- so this is set to be a hardy annual.
