Ranfurley to Hyde – lovely little 32 km ride

Another clear -1 degree night with more frost evident on the bikes – but no probs – we had half a day to relocate the 5 th wheel to Hyde and also drop the ute to the finish point Middlemarch . Barb parked herself and the bikes at a nice cafe in Ranfurley and waited for my return just before midday. I caught a minibus service back.

The trendy cafe – Ranfurley is an Art Deco type town with a real rail town history complete with the classic ” railway refreshment building” to get a pie and a cuppa tea. Great pic of the old classic railcars that NZ rail used in the 60’s and 70’s – they had a truck type trans so it sounded like a truck as it worked through the box coming up to speed..

The last 10 Kms were the highlight of this segment – the track skirts steep slopes of the upper Taieri gorge – has a long tunnel ( 152 metres ) and with a gradual descent it was a real blast. The ride finishes at the small village of Hyde which has a pub and our 5th – that’s about all – our stopping point for tonight.

Chris and Juliet – new friends , from Hawkes Bay , on the trail . They started from Alexandra the same day we did so we have seen them along the way. They are going all the way to middlemarch today – but stopped by for a cuppa in the 5th before cycling the last 30 km’s – Fit farmers !
Meanwhile Barbs going real strong – she extols the virtues of gel saddle covers — she managed to sweet talk a freebie one from the cycle hire company – only one fanny old – the last hiree had neglected to take it home with her so Barb scored the $30 gift. She is even talking ” bike ownership” – I am surprised , pleasantly! Wonder if I have any room in my bike collection for her bike (s) ??
